Deans, Directors, Department Chairs and Administrative Officers:
I am pleased to announce that Eric Sundquist, UCLA Foundation Professor of Literature has agreed to serve as Acting Dean of the Humanities Division in the College of Letters and Science effective July 1, 2003.
Professor Sundquist returned to UCLA after serving as Dean of the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University from 1997 to 2002. Prior to leaving UCLA in 1997, he served as Chair of the Department of English for four years and taught for a number of years at UC Berkeley. Professor Sundquist received his BA degree from the University of Kansas in 1974 and his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1978. He is the author or editor of eight books in the area of American literature and culture, including To Wake the Nations: Race in the Making of American Literature (1993), which received the James Russell Lowell Prize from the Modern Language Association for best book published during the year. He was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Science in 1997; received the MELUS Distinguished Scholar Award in 1996 and the UCLA College of Letters and Science Faculty Award in 1995.
I am very grateful for Professor Sundquist's agreement to serve and look forward to working with him in the coming year. I also want to thank Dean Pauline Yu for her nine years of outstanding service as Dean of the Humanities, and wish her great success as she departs for the east coast to become the sixth president of the American Council of Learned Societies.
Sincerely,
Daniel
