Resolution

We, assembled members of the Faculty of UCLA, at a Special Meeting of the Academic Senate, by a vote of 180 in favor, 7 opposed, and 9 abstentions, say to our fellow citizens, to the President of the United States, and to our Senators and Representatives:

1.       We deplore the Administration’s doctrine of preventive war the President has used to justify the invasion of Iraq that is the first application of this doctrine;

2.       Reaffirm our commitment to addressing international conflicts through the rule of law and the United Nations;

3.       Oppose the establishment of an American protectorate in Iraq; and

4.       Call for the establishment of a post-war representative government in Iraq, answerable to the United Nations, which guarantees to Iraqis inalienable personal, political and civil rights. 


Senate bylaws provide for a mail ballot of all Senate members on the resolution upon petition of 35 members. The petition needs to be presented within 10 days of the publication of the minutes.

After the ten day period, if no petition is submitted, then the resolution will be sent to the President and to our Senators and Representatives.
